Charities

Barretts have extensive experience of the charities sector.

If you’re involved with a charity you know they are very different to main stream businesses. You have to follow a different set of accounting rules, based on the Charity SORP as well as the other regulations contained in the Charities Acts. Your ethos is not about making a profit but to support and raise funds for good causes.

In the same way that your charity likes to help, Barretts’ aim is to help your charity run more efficiently so you save money.

We work with over 50 charities including churches, incorporated and unincorporated charities, Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIOs) and Community Interest Companies (CICs). The types of causes our clients support varies enormously from animal welfare to bereaved children, schools’ fundraising arms to war veterans. The charities we assist have an annual income up to £1m.

Barrettshave extensive experience of the charities sector. Ian served as president of the Association of Charity Independent Examiners (ACIE) and is still heavily involved with association today. Furthermore, Ian is currently one of only four full members in the ACIE in the South West. This means he's up to date with all charity accounting and governance changes which he can pass onto clients. As part of his role with the ACIE, Ian works with other charity-based professionals including lawyers, consultants and fund-raising specialists, which means he can refer you to relevant professionals should your charity need this.

We can help you in many ways including setting up the compliance aspects of a new charity through to preparing the accounts and statutory accounts. We can carry out your independent examinations, meeting with your trustees to discuss accounting and compliance matters. We can also advise on tax implications and gift aid and assist with the preparation of charity trust documents.

At Barretts we firmly believe that our understanding behind the ethos of charities and our expertise in this sector is available to assist your organisation. You can have total confidence that we know and apply the relevant rules and regulations to your charity. We work with a wide range of charities and charity professionals and share their experiences with you.
