Agriculture and Land Based Businesses

At Barretts, we understand that farming is more than just a business, it’s a way of life and that philosophy spreads across many land based businesses.

At Barretts, we understand that farming is more than just a business, it's a way of life and that philosophy spreads across many land based businesses.

We appreciate that "farmers need us most when they can afford us least". We do all we can to help you during any difficult periods, giving more support if needed and working with you to agree a payment plan which works for you. Conversely, there are likely to be times when significant deals are done which involve large sums of money such as selling parcels of land, a herd or perhaps selling the farm outright. During these times you can be reassured that we will have all the financial and taxation aspects covered, enabling you to keep as much of the sales proceeds as possible. However, we also understand that there is an emotional cost to many such deals and we take this into consideration when we are working with you.

Marianne has a long established reputation for working in the agricultural industry. She has run the Ernst & Young (EY) farming group in England and Wales and has written books on agricultural taxation. Having passed her exams in 2014, she is a fellow of the Agricultural Law Association (ALA) and is currently the finance director of the Association. Her work with the ALA keeps her abreast of the latest issues and regulations affecting agriculture and sees her working closely with agricultural lawyers and land agents. From her experience she knows how important it is for all three professions to work together to get the best outcome for you.

Barrett’s expertise in this area was further boosted when Peter Dymond and Dawn Fox, formerly of Farm Accounts Limited in Newton Abbot, joined the practice in 2018 along with Tom Seddon who came to us having focused on working with farming clients in another accountancy firm. Since then, we have significantly developed this side of the practice to be one of the leading tax and accounting advisers for the farming sector across Devon and beyond.

We can help any farming or land based industry on several levels, including the preparation of accounts, calculating tax and submitting returns, tax planning, managing VAT and loan applications. We have extensive experience of preparing cash flow projections which can help you to get funding from the banks or other sources. If you are experiencing a family or partnership issue we help you to work through these and can also advise on the succession of the farm, assisting you with a planned hand over to the next generation.

We work with a wide range of agriculture and land based business covering all aspects of arable, livestock and dairy farms through to diversification businesses including cheese making, bakeries, farm holidays and tourism. We also have extensive experience of working with agricultural contractors.

Where property development is a consideration for your farm, we have a great deal of knowledge in this area. Please refer to our separate page on Property based Businesses for more details.

By choosing Barretts as your accountant you will benefit from our vast rage of experience in this area and have access to our innovative (and legal!) ways of solving problems.
